The best time for a motorcycle tour in South Africa depends on where you ride, because the country runs on two different weather systems. For the Western Cape and the Garden Route, home to the country's most famous riding roads, the answer is clear: November to April.
I guide in the Cape every season, and this is the month-by-month picture I give riders who are choosing their dates.
South Africa's seasons are the opposite of Europe's
South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are reversed. When it's winter in Europe or North America, it's summer in Cape Town.
| Season | Months |
|---|---|
| Summer | December to February |
| Autumn | March to May |
| Winter | June to August |
| Spring | September to November |
The second thing to know: the Western Cape doesn't follow the rest of the country.
- The Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, with most rain between May and August.
- Most of the rest of South Africa, including the Kruger area, gets its rain in summer and is dry in winter.
- The Garden Route gets rain spread across the whole year, which is why it's so green.
- The Karoo, inland, swings between extremes: very hot summer afternoons and freezing winter nights.
So "South Africa's dry season" means opposite months depending on which part you mean.
Month by month: the Western Cape and Garden Route
| Month | Riding verdict | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| January | Good | Hot and dry, busy with local holidays in the first half, very hot afternoons in the Karoo |
| February | Very good | Hot and dry, holiday crowds gone, long days |
| March | Excellent | Warm, settled, quieter roads, the wind starts to drop |
| April | Excellent | Mild days, soft light, autumn colours in the vineyards, a growing chance of rain later in the month |
| May | Fair | Cooler, the start of the rainy season, risk of storms and pass closures |
| June | Poor | Cold and wet, snow possible on mountain passes |
| July | Poor | The heart of winter, snow closures on high passes |
| August | Poor to fair | Still wet and cold early, wildflowers start inland |
| September | Fair | Spring, warming up, still some rain, flowers in bloom |
| October | Good | Mostly dry and pleasant, the summer wind picks up near Cape Town |
| November | Excellent | Warm, green from the winter rain, long days, before the holiday rush |
| December | Good | Warm and dry, busy from mid-month with local holidays |
The sweet spots are November and March to April: settled weather, long days, comfortable temperatures and quieter roads.
Best months for road riding and for gravel
For tar ([Simba](/tour/simba)): November to April. Dry roads are what matter most, and Chapman's Peak, Route 62 and the coastal roads are at their best in the dry season. October can be beautiful too.
For gravel ([Mufasa](/tour/mufasa)): November to April, with a preference for the shoulder months. Gravel is where the season matters most:
- Rain makes gravel slippery and washes out sections of the passes. In May 2026, floods closed the Swartberg for weeks.
- Snow closes the high passes in winter. The Swartberg was closed by snow in August 2026, as it is most winters.
- Midsummer heat on the Karoo floor makes long gravel days hard work. Starting early solves most of it.
November and March are the best months for gravel: dry roads, firm surfaces and temperatures that let you ride all day comfortably. The same goes for the long forest gravel of the Prince Alfred Pass.
What else to factor in
- Local summer holidays. South Africa's main school and family holiday runs from mid-December to mid-January. Lodges book up, the coast gets busy and prices rise.
- Wind. A strong south-easterly, the "Cape Doctor," blows around Cape Town from spring to late summer. On a motorcycle you'll feel it on exposed coastal roads, especially in the afternoon.
- Heat. Karoo afternoons in January and February can be very hot. Good tours start early and finish the riding by mid-afternoon.
- Whales. Southern right whales are seen from the Hermanus cliffs from roughly June to November. A November tour can catch the end of the season.
- Daylight. Summer days are long, so there's time for the riding and the stops. In winter the shorter days limit how far you can go.
Riding in the Southern Hemisphere winter? Go north
The Western Cape's wet season is the dry season further north. If your holiday falls between June and October, Namibia is the place to ride. That's why our Namib tour runs in that window: a hard gravel and sand route from Cape Town through Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei to Windhoek, in the desert's best riding months.
When our South Africa tours run
Both our Western Cape tours run in the best riding window, November to April.
- [Simba](/tour/simba), 9 days, 100% tar: Chapman's Peak, Route 62, Clarence Drive and the Garden Route.
- [Mufasa](/tour/mufasa), 11 days, about 75% gravel: Swartberg, Prince Alfred and Rooiberg passes.
The current departures are Simba in February 2027 and Mufasa in February and April 2027, and each tour page always shows the latest dates. Groups are small, so seats go early. Not sure which suits you? Read Simba or Mufasa: road tour or gravel tour?, or browse all our guided motorcycle tours.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month for a motorcycle tour in South Africa?
For the Western Cape and Garden Route, November and March are the best: dry, warm, long days and quieter roads. The full good season runs November to April.
Can you ride in South Africa in winter?
In the Western Cape, June to August brings rain, cold and snow closures on high passes, so it's the worst time for touring there. Further north, winter is the dry season, and Namibia is at its best from June to October.
Is December a good time to ride?
The weather is good, but mid-December to mid-January is South Africa's main holiday period. Roads and lodges are busier and prices are higher.
Does it rain on the Garden Route in summer?
It can. The Garden Route gets rain throughout the year, though summer showers usually pass quickly.
When do the mountain passes close?
Gravel passes like the Swartberg close during snow, usually in winter, and after heavy rain or flood damage. Closures are least likely between November and April.
Is it too hot to ride in January?
Not on the coast, but Karoo afternoons can be very hot. Ride early and keep the hottest hours for a long lunch.
